I would completely uninstall the VM tools, reboot the machine, delete the vmware folder, then reinstall the tools again, then reboot again.
NETWORK CABLE UNPLUGGED MEANING WINDOWS
This gets especially ugly when it happens on a machine with two nics for example I only want my TFTP server on one network, but if Windows happens to have taken the IP address away when my TFTP server is started (cable temporarily out), the TFTP server might acquire the IP address of the nic that is up. Probably driver, look in the hardware config for that VM, and see if the network card is showing a yellow exclamation. Ideally, the IP address would not evaporate, Windows would just list the interface as 'no link' or something. This wreaks havoc on certain network utilities, such that once the cable is back in place, I then have to go re-tune their settings to get things back to normal. Tip: Cable can be tightly connected using your fingers. Go to the Virgin Media wall socket to make sure the white coax cable is connected.

The specific problem is that when a cable is out, while you can still see the network adapter name/properties in the 'Network Connections', the OS seemingly unbinds the IP address from the port, as evidenced by the output of ipconfig. it seems OS (the procedure which must to alter the icon) simply loose state change event, or it is some icons cache issue. This is just a network hint of what ESX can see being broadcast. When this happens, the network's icon in the control panel becomes greyed out with a red X and the label says 'Network cable unplugged'. under the 'available networks' listing, each NIC shows a range of one IP address on its segment. While the LAN-ports (Local Area Network) will connect to your computer and other devices, the WAN-Port needs to be connected to the wall or the modem that your ISP has provided. If it's Windows XP, check the Windows firewall settings as by default RDP access won't be allowed. Inspect the cables connector and the Xbox consoles socket to make sure. The WAN-Port is the uplink to the internet. Is there a way to make windows stop dropping the interface every time a cable comes unplugged? I don't care about those little balloons that pop up when the cable state changes, as annoying as those are. Setting up a wired connection Unplug the network cable from the back of your console.
